Partial Review of “The World Tilting Gospel”

I am reading “The World Tilting Gospel”(TWTG) By Dan Phillips. He is a team blogger over at Pyromaniacs. My hope one day is to be listed, if only for a day, in their blog roll. I have been hooked on reading DJP ever since I first read his post. He thinks like I do, but unlike myself he can put his thoughts out there.

Now for my partial review. Partial because I keep reading the introduction and first chapter over and over again. Why, because I have thought this before. I just could never get it out in words. The introduction starts out, after some descriptives of the time, with Acts 17:6-7

6And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also7and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”

Do you see that? TURNED THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN. DJP then makes the statement

The Local Christians didn’t have a power base. They didn’t control the local media. They had no big name in celebrities giving concerts with two-minute “testimonies” at the end. They didn’t have massive popular numbers. They didn’t PR firms shinning their image.
They didn’t have lines of clothing, entertainment, or holy hardware. They didn’t own buildings. Their assemblies could mostly be contained in people’s homes (take that anti home church people). They didn’t control any institutions–religious, educational, or political. They didn’t have money, equipment, or rapid transport vehicles. They couldn’t even Twitter!
Yet they created something like blind panic virtually everywhere they went.
How did they do it?

Now stop and think about where this is going. DJP goes into what the 1st century church lacked compared to what we have today.
Institutions, sway, numbers, technology, money, equipment, connections, glitz and glamour.

We have some delusional people that get goosebumps at Matt Pitt’s entertaining Basement that think we are World Tilting.

I am going to let y’all chew on that for a day or two, and let y’all think about what kind of Gospel that needs to be preached to be World Tilting. Preach the right one and churches would not have this 80/20 problem. The 80 mostly being goats getting their ears tickled.
