SEC Football, Church And God…

Well it is that time of year again where everyone gets all excited about football. War Eagle! and Roll Tide! shouts are carrying across our shop at work. FaceBook status’s are all about can’t wait til Saturday, people have been counting down to the first kick off 3 months ago. I have to admit that I am little excited about the season too. There is nothing wrong with football. I love it, but too many out there make an idol out of it and don’t know it.
One of the first things asked of you when you move to Alabama is “What team are you for?” and then followed up with “Where do you or have you found a church yet?”
Sunday’s are filled with people wearing their team colors and talk is all about “Did you see that game?” or “Auburn really kicked some butt and it was a shame that Bama lost” (guess who I am for). That kind of talk will continue on up til the call to worship, and if your church does that stupid meet and greet thing in the middle of worship the conversations will pick up again and will continue in Sunday School class and on after church into the workday Monday.

Let me remind you something about God. He is a JEALOUS God. Don’t believe me? Let us read it together from Scripture.

Exodus 20:3-4

3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.

4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

There is already too much fluff and unnecessary garbage taking the focus off of God in most churches today and it just becomes even more so during College Football season.

It is a shame really that people get more excited about football than the Great Commission we are under and will shout out War Eagle! or a Roll Tide to a stranger and not able to share the Gospel with them. And they will spend more time getting ready for a football game and study and remember players names, keep track of stats, and spend ZERO time studying the Bible and memorizing Scripture and getting their heart ready for worship. Contrary to the popular song, you can’t come as you are to worship.

Please don’t take from this that I hate football. I don’t. We just need to focus more on what IS important. Life is a vapor!

Let me leave you with this,  WAR EAGLE!!!
